Homeopathy offers a gentle, individualised approach to managing acute conditions—those short-lived complaints such as coughs, sore throats, minor injuries, or digestive upsets. These are the sorts of symptoms that prompt a visit to the local chemist, and many can be supported effectively with remedies from the Helios Basic Remedies Kit. In this first of four parts, we explore nine remedies commonly used in acute presentations, each selected for its relevance to everyday symptoms.

Onset of a cold: Aconite A remedy for the very first signs of illness, especially when symptoms appear suddenly after exposure to cold wind or fright. Aconite is often used at the onset of a cold, sore throat, or fever, particularly when accompanied by restlessness or anxiety.

Chest cough: Antimonium Tartaricum Indicated in chesty coughs with rattling mucus that is difficult to expectorate. The person may feel weak and drowsy, and the cough sounds loose but unproductive. Often used in bronchial conditions, especially in children or the elderly.

Red swelling: Apis Mellifica Useful in conditions with swelling, redness, and stinging pain—such as sore throats, insect bites, or allergic reactions. Symptoms are typically relieved by cold applications and worsened by heat. Apis suits individuals who are restless and irritable.

Anxiety and IBS: Argentum Nitricum Often chosen for anxiety-related digestive upsets or anticipatory symptoms before events. It’s also used in sore throats with rawness and hoarseness, especially when symptoms are aggravated by speaking or swallowing.

Bruising: Arnica Montana The go-to remedy for bruising, shock, and physical trauma. Arnica is widely used for injuries, falls, or after surgery, where there is soreness and a feeling of being “beaten up.” It also supports recovery from overexertion.

Arsenicum Album Indicated in cases of food poisoning, diarrhoea, or flu-like symptoms with restlessness and chilliness. The person may feel anxious and exhausted, with burning pains that are relieved by warmth. It’s also used in respiratory complaints with wheezing.

Fever, headache: Belladonna Suited to sudden, intense symptoms—high fever, flushed face, throbbing headache, and sensitivity to light or noise. Belladonna is often used in sore throats or earaches with marked inflammation and a hot, dry feeling.

Dry cough: Bryonia Alba Chosen when symptoms worsen with movement and improve with rest. Bryonia is used for dry coughs, headaches, or muscular pain where the person wants to lie still and finds relief from pressure. It’s a key remedy in dry, painful chest conditions.

Infections: Calcarea Carbonica A constitutional remedy often used in children with recurring infections, slow development, or excessive sweating. In acute settings, it may be helpful in colds or earaches where the person is chilly, tired, and overwhelmed.
